Sugar-Scaffolds Could Grow Organs

Sugar-Scaffolds Could Grow Organs
Jun-08-18
3D-printed scaffolds made of sugar could be used to grow biological structures before dissolving away.

The scaffolds are created using a specialized 3D printer developed by Matthew Gelber and Rohit Bhargava, a professor at the Cancer Center at Illinois. Though there are other printers able to use sugar, the new printer differs in that it relies on isomalt, which will cool and solidify into a sturdy, complex structure that could be used to support the growth of soft materials before dissolving away.
