Sun-Baked Moon Bricks

Sun-Baked Moon Bricks
May-04-17
A team from ESA has joined the interstellar construction race with their sturdy bricks made of moon soil and sunlight.

The moon bricks were made using an earlier 3D process that relied on a binding salt to hold the material together. To eliminate the need for a separate binder, the ESA team cooked the bricks in a solar furnace made up of 147 curved mirrors. The concentrated sunlight melted the simulated moondust material into a solid form, with one brick taking about five hours to complete.

The RegoLight project has been established to further explore the process’s potential on other lunar environments.
