An electronic chip thin enough to be wrapped around a hair could have applications solar cells and wearable bio-sensors.
Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich created the chip by building an electric circuit on top a sandwich of polyvinyl layers placed atop a hard base, and then submerging the whole bit in water. The water dissolved two of the layers, releasing the base and leaving behind a circuit embedded on a thin, transparent film only one micrometer thick.
The new technology has been tested on an artificial eye by adding the chip to a contact lens to measure pressure and provide a monitor for glaucoma.
