Surgical Handle Lights Up to Signal Optimal Force

Surgical Handle Lights Up to Signal Optimal Force
Feb-13-13
Researchers at Fraunhofer have developed a special handle for surgical tools that will light up when the correct amount of force has been applied during medical procedures.

The handle will fit on most standard surgical tools and offers a visual aid for less experienced surgeons. Sensors in handle measure the amount of force applied, such as when a screw is being tighten in a bone, and a red LED will light up once the optimal amount has been reached. To prevent the accumulation of bacteria, the handle is designed as one solid piece, with all the electronics embedded within, and it can be charged wirelessly via an induction table.
