Sweat Sensor Measures pH Levels

Jan-16-20
An innovative sensor able to measure the wearer’s pH balance could be incorporated in fitness trackers to monitor dehydration or blood sugar.

The pH Watch developed by the team from NUS can be integrated into existing wearables, where it will continuously monitor the pH of the wearer’s sweat. The sensor was made using a polyaniline polymer, which changes color in response to pH levels and works in conjunction with a pulse oximeter. The changing colors were designed to match the pulse oximeter’s recording capabilities, allowing the pH watch to monitor pH levels in real-time, along with heart rate and blood oxygen saturation, with a 90 percent accuracy.

According to the team, pH levels offer valuable insights into the wearer’s health, with higher levels indicating dehydration or low blood glucose.
