Sweat Sensor Powered by Sweat

Sweat Sensor Powered by Sweat
Apr-10-16
A new sweat operated pump inspired by plants could open the door to a new generation of flexible sweat sensors meant to be affixed to the skin.

Developed by a team from Eindhoven University, the sensor is made up of porous micro-chamber at one end and piece of paper at the other. The system is set within a sheet of flexible plastic foil. When the sensor is placed on the skin, the paper absorbs the sweat and transfers it through the chambers and into a porous structure at the end, resulting in constant flow without the use of external power.

The team then incorporated a microchip in the device, allowing it to analyze the sweat as it moves through the channels. They also believe other sensors could be added, able to analyze other substances.
