Tagged Sharks Send Twitter Alerts
Dec-31-13
In order to reduce the number of shark attacks in Western Australia, scientists have tagged the sharks with a device that sends a Twitter message as a warning to surfers and swimmers.

To create the Shark Monitoring Network, scientists attached transmitter tags to over 300 sharks to track the sharks’ location along the coast. The tags communicate with a network of floating monitoring devices that will pick up the signal of an approaching shark and trigger an alarm that is sent on a Twitter feed. The tweet includes the location of the shark, as well as its size and breed.

More shark attacks occur off the coast of Western Australia than almost anywhere else on the world, and the Ministers had recently agreed to allow the culling of sharks in certain areas. The Twitter alert system could provide a less controversial option.
