TellSpec Makes Ingredient Identification Easy

Mar-27-14 The TellSpec handheld scanner works with a smartphone to quickly identify a food's ingredients, calories, nutrients and potential allergens.

Developed by Texas Instruments and a Canadian start-up, the TellSpec scanner is the first handheld food scanner created for consumer use. The device takes advantage of the digital light processing technology developed by TI, and uses spectroscopy to measure reflected light and identify the chemical composition of food. The information is analyzed by a proprietary algorithm and then sent to a smartphone using the companion app.

According to the developers, the accuracy of the TellSpec will improve over times as data is collected from different types of food around the world.
