The extremely photosensitive WORM display can be written on with a beam of light and dissolved in water for disposal.
Created by a team of students from Universiti Malaysia Pahang, the Write Once Read Many display was made by combining photosensitive compounds and liquid crystals to create a pair of substrates. A photo mask containing the information to be 'printed' is placed on top of the second substrate, where it is exposed to UV light that transfers the data to the WORM display.
The information can be written as permanent or erasable, depending upon the process, and the images are made stable with the application of a curing glue. This glue can be easily removed and the displays safely dissolved in water, which makes them safer for the environment.
