Thinner Sound Diffusing Panel

Thinner Sound Diffusing Panel
Jun-10-17
Researchers have created ultra-thin sound diffusing panels able reduce echoes while taking up a fraction of the space.

Typical echo reducing panels are based on the Schroeder diffuser design, which requires that the depth of the diffuser be half the wavelength of the lowest sound to be diffused—resulting in panels that are quite bulky.

To help reduce that bulk, the new diffuser design from North Carolina State University and Nanjing University requires the material be only five percent as thick as the sound’s wavelength. This was accomplished by using individual squares cut into the material, each with a different sized opening. By varying the openings of the cavities rather than the depth, the team was able to create a sound diffusing panel one-tenth the size of conventional versions.
