The CORE House from Q4 Architects is designed for tornado prone areas, and features a central tornado-safe room for families to retreat to during storms.
The CORE House, created for communities in Missouri, is not only tornado-safe but also livable—one of the more unusual aspects of the design. The house features an extremely sturdy, 600 square-foot core made of concrete with hurricane shutters and tornado doors. This center room provides the safe retreat during severe storms, and is surrounded by several flexible and affordable rooms that make up the more roomy and conventional living spaces. The CORE room is also the ‘heart’ of the house, and holds the kitchen, a bathroom, Murphy beds and access to backup systems.
