Taking advantage of the melding of smartphones and medical sensors, LionsGate Technologies has released a technology that allows medical sensors to use any smartphone as an interface.
The Vital Signs DSP sensors are designed to communicate through the audio jack, which is an inexpensive and common way to transfer data. Their flagship product, the Phone Oximeter, attaches to the smartphone and clips to a finger to provide non-invasive measurements of blood oxygen levels and heart rate. The finger clip is powered by the phone, with the results displayed on the phone’s screen.
The near-universal use of smartphones helps to lower the cost of bringing specific diagnostic tools to remote or developing countries.
