Turning Skin into Blood

Turning Skin into Blood
Nov-07-10
McMaster scientists have discovered how to make human blood out of human skin.

This could mean that people needing blood for surgery, cancer treatment or anemia, will be able to have blood created from a patch of their own skin.

The conversion is direct and does not require the middle step of changing a skin stem cell into a pluripotent stem cell and then turning it into a blood stem cell.

It works on skin from any age group.

Sounds like a very progressive step in health care. Just wondering though, how much skin would be required to make a pint of blood?
