Ultra-Thin Camera Lens Could Revolutionize Camera Design

Ultra-Thin Camera Lens Could Revolutionize Camera Design
Feb-16-16
Researchers have created an ultra-thin, super-acromatic lens that could find its way to cameras within just a few years.

Developed by a team from the University of Utah, the lens is ten times thinner than a human hair. Whereas conventional flat diffractive lenses create chromatic aberrations by bending different wavelengths of light in different ways, the new lens features a special microstructure geometry that bends the wavelengths in such a way that the colors come to focus at a single point.

The lens can be made of any transparent material, and the technology could open the doors to applications in medical devices, drones and satellites, as well as smartphone cameras.
