An ultrasound system able to charge medical implants could reduce the costs and risks associated with replacement surgery.
The new system, from a team at Sungkyunkwan University, overcomes the low voltage limitations of current wireless charging devices by delivering power to the implanted device using an ultrasound probe and triboelectric generator. The generator, which would be implanted in the body, is able to absorb ultrasound waves and use them to create an electric current able to power a pacemaker or other common medical implants.
