The USB 3.0 Promoter Group has announced the development of a new USB connector that plugs in correctly not matter which side is up.
The USB Type-C connector and cable will be smaller, about the size of the current USB Micro-B, and as the company states, easier to plug in because “users will no longer need to be concerned about the orientation/cable direction.” Scheduled to be released in the middle of 2014, the new USB connector is designed to work with emerging technology, and so will not be compatible with current devices.
The USB 3.0 Promoter Group is made up of Hewlett-Packard Company, Intel Corporation, Microsoft Corporation, Renesas Electronics and Texas Instruments.
