Using Smartphones to Prevent Collisions

Using Smartphones to Prevent Collisions
Oct-12-13
A new technology from Honda could help prevent inattentive, smartphone-carrying pedestrians from being hit by cars.

The technology is based on the already existing vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) network technology. Called V2P (vehicle-to-pedestrian), the system is designed to be installed in both cars and smartphones, and is basically an automatic broadcast system. Hardware embedded in a smartphone would constantly monitor and broadcast the position of the user and the direction they are headed, while the hardware in the car monitors the flow of pedestrian information gathered from the smartphones around it. If the system predicts that a person is about to walk into the path of the vehicle, a warning message will be sent to both the driver (on a heads-up display) and the pedestrian’s smartphone.

Honda is working to develop similar technology for cars and motorcycles.
