Made up of an array of springs attached to a box, the ViBa system was created to help protect vulnerable buildings from earthquakes by absorbing the energy from the seismic waves.
The system, proposed by a team at the University of Brighton, has been in development for three years. The vibrating barrier, or ViBa, would consist of a box holding an array of springs that surround the structure they are meant to protect. The flexible nature of the springs would allow the building to move with the earthquake event, absorbing up to 80 percent of the quake’s energy and protecting the building from damage.
According to the development team, a series of ViBa units could be placed around an area at specific locations to form a sort of “network” that would protect the entire city.
