The solar-powered VineRobot travels a vineyard's rows autonomously, gathering data on growing conditions and sending the information to a smartphone.
Currently under development by a consortium of European universities and companies, the VineRobot is equipped with an array of sensors, including chlorophyll-based fluorescence sensing and infrared thermography. As it travels the vineyard rows using GPS and stereoscopic machine vision, the sensors allow it to monitor factors such as growth, yield, grape composition, and soil moisture non-invasively. The information is transmitted to a satellite and then to the farmer's mobile device.
