Researchers have created a camera-embedded bionic hand that uses vision and AI to adjust its grip automatically.
While manipulating our normal limbs comes naturally, operating a prosthetic hand is cumbersome and takes practice, as each motion must be consciously controlled by the user.
The new vision- and AI-equipped bionic hand from Newcastle University aims to overcome this obstacle by giving the device the ability to analyze the object the user is reaching for, and adjust its grip automatically. The hand relies on machine learning to recognize different objects, and sorts them into the type of grasp that would be needed to successfully pick them up and interact with them.
