Volta Rocking Chair Charges Gadgets While You Relax

Volta Rocking Chair Charges Gadgets While You Relax
Jul-18-15
Showcasing an interesting blend of old and new technology, the student-designed Volta rocking chair charges a smartphone while you rock.

Created by a team from UC Berkeley, the Volta is equipped with a pendulum- and gear-based system. As the user sits in the chair, the rocking motion will cause the pendulum attached to the chair’s seat to move back and forth. This motion causes gears in an attached motor to turn, generating energy that is sent to batteries in the pendulum. An ultra-low circuit FireStorm board microcontroller is then used to power electronics plugged into the UBS port on the chair.
