VTOL-X Boasts Hybrid Wings for Vertical and Horizontal Flight

VTOL-X Boasts Hybrid Wings for Vertical and Horizontal Flight
Mar-08-16
The VTOL X-Plane from DARPA features a hybrid design that allows it to take off and land vertically while still achieving a higher speed and greater range.

The VTOL Experimental Plane boasts two rear wings and two smaller canards on the front, each made up of an array of cells containing ducted fans. The fans are all equipped with separate electric motors and powered by a turboshaft engine able to provide 3 MW of electrical power. Instead of a gearbox, the power is distributed to the fans using a “transmission-agnostic air vehicle design,” which calls upon the flight control system to monitor the fans’ thrust and switch between vertical and horizontal flight.

Although the VTOL-X is a few years out from manufacturing, the team is excited by the possibilities of opening the door—or airport—to high-speed, long-range aircraft that are not constrained by the need for runways.

Congrats !!!
Great invention and design using hybrid wings technology.

Dear friends you make mistake with explanation. Long-range aircraft have to take a big amount of fuel and do not have thrust / propulsion to payload. Short Take Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) concept will be very useful for DOD transport aircraft. However, this VTOL-X of Aurora will have long way before manufacturing, not few year’s that you write.

Lift Fan to F 35B was invented by engineer Paul Bevilaqua in 1990. Lockheed Martin continued F 35 project since 2000. F 35A and F 35 C are good alternative to F 16, F18 and A10. However F 35B is too expensive concerning Harrier. Several years ago, I proposed to DARPA some new VTOL Aircraft concept different from F 35 B. I propose simply technology to upgrade conventional Fighter aircraft to VTOL. This technology do not require addition Fan Unit like F 35B or addition turbojet motors like Yak-38. However, DARPA boycott individual inventors.

Yes, I agree with Michael. Not sure there is much new here except the 3 Mwatt generator and large government contracts. Just new to me.
Go to EAA show for the new stuff. How about an anti gravity machine? That's new.
