Wastewater Algae Cleans and Thrives

Wastewater Algae Cleans and Thrives
Apr-06-15
By growing algae on wastewater, researchers at Rice University have developed a way to grow the valuable crop without chemical fertilizers.

Along with its use as a biofuel, algae can also be found in cosmetics and nutritional supplements. As an alternative to the conventional chemical fertilizer method, the Rice team has been experimenting with growing the algae on open pools of wastewater at a Houston waste treatment plant. After just over three months, the algae had removed more than 90 percent of the nitrates and 50 percent of the phosphorus from the wastewater.
