Wax Storage Leads to Safer Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Wax Storage Leads to Safer Hydrogen Fuel Cells
Oct-29-16
A wax-based method of storing hydrogen could open the door to large-scale manufacturing of fuel-cell powered vehicles.

While hydrogen has great promise as a fuel source, the lack of a safe way to store it has kept its applications limited. To help bring the fuel alternative to the mainstream, an international group of researchers has demonstrated a method of storing the fuel as hydrocarbon wax. Hydrocarbon wax will release large amounts of hydrogen when triggered by microwaves and catalysts, and is also much safer to transport and store.

The team believes the discovery could release the bottleneck that has prevented hydrogen fuel cells from widespread adoption.
