The Wearable Artificial Kidney (WAK) could significantly improve the quality of life of people who must use a dialysis machine as part of their routine.
The WAK dialysis machine is small enough to be worn on a belt around the waist, much like a tool belt, and is connected to the patient by a catheter. It can run continuously on battery power and is able to filter and reuse the water necessary for the treatment—about a pint a day, compared to the 40 gallons required by previous machines. The result is a device small enough to be worn while walking around, providing much higher level of comfort and freedom to the patient.
Current dialysis sessions require the patient be tethered to a large, bulky machine, and typical sessions occur about three times a week and last between three and four hours.
