Wearable Device Helps Treat Swallowing Disorders

Wearable Device Helps Treat Swallowing Disorders
Dec-17-19
A wearable sensor device that monitors the muscles associated with swallowing could lead to better treatments for people with swallowing disorders.

The inexpensive and disposable stick-on sensor was developed by a team from Purdue University as an alternative to the expensive equipment that may not be available in remote and impoverished regions. The slender little sensor attaches to the neck, where it measures the muscles and movement associated with swallowing. The device can be worn at home, with the information transmitted to a wireless unit worn by the patient, where it is stored for later analysis by the physician. That data can then be used to determine the best course of treatment for the patient, such as specialized exercises.

According to research, more than nine million adults and 500,000 children experience severe swallowing disorders in the US each year.
