WiFi Drones See Inside Walls

WiFi Drones See Inside Walls
Jun-21-17
WiFi-equipped drones can see through walls to create a 3D map of the interior.

The system, developed by a team at the University of California, Santa Barbara, is an evolution of the team’s earlier, ground-based system. The aerial method—which results in 3D images—relies on a pair of drones flying together on either side of the structure. As one drone transmits a WiFi signal, the second one receives the signal and measures how it varies as it passes through the walls. By analyzing the variance of the signal, the system was able to determine a 3D image of the shapes within the structure.
