Researchers have created a window able to generate power while also regulating heating and cooling.
Developed by a team from the South China University of Technology, the prototype window is made up of organic photovoltaics that have been used to create lightweight, semi-transparent films. By combining materials previously developed to harvest light for electricity, block infrared light, and allow light in, the team created a window able to let in light while blocking heat-producing infrared light and harvesting the near-infrared region for conversion to an electric current.
According to senior author Hin-Lap Yip, "Making heat-insulating multifunctional semitransparent polymer solar cells is just the beginning of exploring new applications of organic photovoltaics. A version tailored for self-powered greenhouses is only one of many impactful products that we want to develop for the future."
