A new implant able to treat dry eye syndrome by electronically stimulating tear prodution could replace the need for frequent doses of eye drops.
The implant, developed by a team from Stanford University, measures 16 mm long, 4 mm wide and 2 mm thick and can be triggered wirelessly. In initial tests, the device was implanted beneath the lacrimal gland of lab rabbits, where it increased tear production by almost 57 percent. However, further tests proved that stimulating the afferent neural pathway—which connects the sensory neurons in the eye to the brain—was even more effective.
The implant could be available commercially within a year.
