The first ever sodium ion battery that fits the industry standard format could have a significant impact on the way we power our electronics.
Created by a team from France's Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, the battery was inspired by lithium ion battery technology, with the sodium ions moving through liquid from one electrode to another. The team is keeping the materials used a secret, but say that “Its energy density is comparable to certain lithium-ion batteries, such as the lithium-ion iron/phosphate battery."
Sodium is much more plentiful than lithium, and is plentiful in both the earth’s crust and seawater.
