Researchers have developed what may be the world’s first stretchable optical interconnections, which could have applications in stretchable electronics and wearable body sensors.
While stretchable electronics have become more common, the new technology is the first to allow for communication by light. The interconnections are made of a transparent elastic material called PDMS, which provides a path for the light even when they are stretched up to 30 percent and bent around an object with the diameter of a human finger. When the new interconnections were integrated into a circuit made up of a light source and detector, the result was a tiny bendable and stretchable ‘link’ that could be used in optical communications systems.
