World's Strongest Artificial Muscles Made from Fishing Line

World's Strongest Artificial Muscles Made from Fishing Line
Feb-26-14
By twisting and heating a standard fishing line, researchers have created what they are calling the world’s strongest artificial muscles, able to lift 100 times that of a muscle of similar size.

The muscles were developed by a team led by the University of Texas at Dallas along with several international universities. To build the muscles, the team attached one end of a piece of fishing line to a power drill and the other end to a heavy weight. As the line was twisted by the spinning power drill tip, it coiled over itself to create a series of stacking loops. The team then applied heat to the coiled line, causing the coils to set permanently, and applying heat again to the line caused it to coil even tighter and contract like a muscle.

The team also demonstrated similar effects using silver-coated nylon thread, which can be heated with electricity.
