X-Ray Filter Captures and Kills Airborne Pathogens

X-Ray Filter Captures and Kills Airborne Pathogens
Feb-05-13
A new filter uses x-rays to capture and kill even tiny airborne pathogens more efficiently than the devices currently in use.

Scientists created the soft x-ray electrostatic precipitator (SXC ESP) by adding a shielded soft x-ray emitter to an ESP. ESP devices work by placing a charge on the particles and then trapping them in an electrical field. With the addition of the SXC unit (the soft x-ray), the filter is able to inactivate the particles by irradiating and photo-ionizing them.

The filter has a wide range of applications, including indoor protection for susceptible people, protection during a bio-attack and the capture of diesel exhaust particles.
