The Combined Use of Bacillus thuringiensis Insecticide and Double-Stranded RNA for Insect Control
Status: Open Deadline: Ongoing Award: $12,500 for each accepted prior art citation
The Seeker is looking for any non-patent literature, presentations, posters, proceedings, literature, proposals, reports, patents or patent applications, etc. publicly disclosed prior to April 9, 2004 to challenge the novelty of specific concepts and methods in the claims of these patents:
The information of interest will most likely be found in publicly disclosed, non-patent literature such as: presentations, posters, public lectures, oral proceedings, conference proceedings, literature, scientific journals, research proposals or reports, university trials, citations, laboratory manuals, or publicly available thesis.
Information can be from primary or secondary sources and in English language or non-English with relevant passages translated into English.
The expected deliverable is a reference publicly disclosed prior to April 9, 2004 providing the information or evidence listed.
Information of greatest interest will describe control of Western corn rootworm (WCR) by use of a combination of a Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) insecticide and a double-stranded RNA that inhibits an essential gene of WCR (for example, genes involved in normal growth, reproduction or metabolism).
Information of greatest interest:
References will describe control of Western corn rootworm (WCR) by use of a combination of a Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) insecticide and a double-stranded (ds)RNA that inhibits an essential gene of WCR. Examples include any combination of:
A Bt insecticidal agent expressed in a transgenic plant (any species), sprayed on a plant, or as part an artificial diet,
A dsRNA that targets an essential gene in Western corn rootworm expressed in a transgenic plant (any species), sprayed on a plant, or as part of an artificial diet.
Relevant citations of greatest interest will relate to Western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera). Information for other Diabrotica rootworm species or other coleopteran species (beetles) may also be of interest for partial award, but the Bt toxin and dsRNA must control the same Diabrotica/coleopteran pest.
Information of Interest for Partial Award:
References describing the use of any combination of inhibitory RNA molecules with another pesticide to control the same target insect species. Any inhibitory RNA molecule is of interest.
Essential genes are generally genes involved in normal growth, reproduction or metabolism.
References of greatest interest will describe the combined impact of dsRNA with another pesticide on coleopteran insects (beetles) and, especially, for Western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera).
Key concepts: RNA interference, RNAi, double-stranded RNA, dsRNA, antisense RNA; Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) insecticide; control of Western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera, Diabrotica spp.
Trade names for products containing Bacillus thuringiensis or Bt-based insecticidal agents include Acrobe, Agree, Bactospeine, Berliner, Biobit, Condor, Certan, Cutlass, Dipel, Foil, Full-Bac, Javelin, Leptox, M-Peril, M-Trak, MVP, Novabac, Novodor, Teknar, Thuricide, Victory, and Xentari.

Note: All related patent applications and patents, including foreign equivalents, of any listed patent documents are also excluded.
A prior art citation is any presentation, oral proceeding, grant proposal, lecture notes, thesis (PhD or Masters), conference proceeding, conference poster, foreign language citation, government report or other dissemination of information or technology that publicly discloses the specific concepts related to the search prior to the date indicated.
Please be VERY specific about how your submission meets the request criteria, and include a copy of the actual citation, not just an excerpt.
