The innovative Cinema 3D system from MIT may one day enable movie-goers to enjoy 3D movies without the need for glasses.
While glasses-free 3D viewing is already possible on small screens (via a series of slits called a parallax barrier), it is much harder to accomplish in a theater because everyone has a different viewing angle. To overcome that obstacle, the MIT team developed a way to encode many different parallax barriers in a single display, effectively tailoring the parallax barrier to each seat.
The Cinema 3D technology is still in the early stages, but the team believes it is a significant step towards glasses-free 3D viewing.
