A helmet filled with coffee grounds offers a better way to track head movements during delicate surgeries.
Delicate ear, nose and throat surgeries require that the patient wears a special, reflective dot-studded headband that allows the team to track where the tools are inside the patient. However, the headband can sometimes slip out of position, which in turn distorts the measurements.
As a better fitting alternative, the team at Vanderbilt University devised a silicon cap filled with dried coffee grounds. After placing the cap on the patient’s head, a vacuum was used to cause the coffee grounds to become rigid, holding the cap tightly, but comfortably, on the head.
