Electronic Shark Shield Deters Sharks

Electronic Shark Shield Deters Sharks
Jun-22-15
The Shark Shield aims to reduce shark attacks with an electric shield that temporarily confuses the shark’s navigational system.

Created by the University of Western Australia’s Ocean Institute, the Shark Shield emits a powerful electric field that interferes with the shark’s electroreceptive system, confusing it and giving swimmers in the area time to leave the water. This technology is already in use by divers in Western Australia, and is now being trialed as part of a larger network that could protect a wider area. In tests, a rig with the shield installed only had its bait taken by sharks ten percent of the time, compared to every time on rigs without the shield.
