Hybrid Solar Device Could Power Hydrogen Vehicles

Hybrid Solar Device Could Power Hydrogen Vehicles
Nov-24-17
A hybrid device that generates hydrogen and electricity from the sun could offer a new source of clean fuel.

Developed by a team at the University of Califonia, Los Angeles, the device is a combination of a supercapacitor and a hydrogen fuel cell, which are powered by solar energy. It features an additional, third electrode, which can store energy or use it to carry out water electrolysis—separating the oxygen and hydrogen atoms.

The UCLA team hopes the hybrid device will help usher in hydrogen vehicles, since now the owners would be able to produce their own fuel using solar energy.
