The first floating wind farm, called the Hywind Scotland Pilot Park, is slated to be built off the coast of Scotland, where it will provide power to about 20,000 homes.
Developed by Statiol, the 30 MW wind turbine farm pilot park was created to demonstrate the reality of large-scale, commercial wind farms. The wind farm will spread over 1.5 square miles in the North Sea, at an area where the wind speeds reach around 19 knots. The Hywind floating turbine technology has been in development for some time, with the first prototype installed in 2009.
Because the Hywind system can be installed in deep waters, the team hopes the wind farms will become more common as they are able to expand into deeper waters.
