Maestro Implant Blocks Hunger Signals

Maestro Implant Blocks Hunger Signals
Jan-24-15
The Maestro System FROM EnteroMedic helps fight obesity by blocking the hunger signals sent to brain—and is the first obesity device approved by the FDA in ten years.

The pacemaker-like, implantable device uses what the company calls VBLOC vagal blocking therapy. By applying electrical pulses to the vagus nerve, the Maestro implant hinders the signals sent along the nerve between the brain and the stomach, suppressing feelings of hunger. The device is powered by an external, rechargeable battery, and can usually be implanted as an outpatient procedure. The treatment is also completely reversible.
