A tiny glucose monitor that can be placed in the eye to monitor blood sugar levels could provide diabetics with a less invasive—and more reliable—way to keep track of their blood glucose.

Many diabetics fail to keep accurate track of their glucose levels because of the hassle or fear of drawing blood for testing. The tiny, spiral-shaped sensor from NovioSense could help ease some of that burden by placing the sensor in the lower eyelid. The sensor is coated with a soft hydrogel and is flexible enough to conform comfortably to the shape of the lower eye lid, where it can continuously measure the tiny fluctuations in blood sugar in tears. The sensor is compatible with NFC technology, enabling the results to be read with either a dedicated reader or a smartphone, and can be worn for up to two weeks—though the development team is working to increase that span of time.
