Robo Fish Helps Build Fish-Friendly Dams

Robo Fish Helps Build Fish-Friendly Dams
Jun-02-15
Spawning fish have gotten a bit of a techno-boost with the development of Homer, a robo-fish that lets scientists determine how to help fish navigate hydroelectric dams.

Spawning fish often lose their way while navigating the conventional—and expensive—concrete fish ladders because they are unable to detect the downstream current that guides them to their destination.

The robotic fish, called Homer, is equipped with a lateral line sensor, which allows it to collect information about the water flow and any obstacles or confining spaces that could interfere with the fishes’ navigation. According to Jeffery Tuhtan, the robo-fish will provide a fish-based interpretation of how passable the fish ladder is, rather than the somewhat distant engineering perspective.
