Self-Healing Airplane Wings

Self-Healing Airplane Wings
Jun-25-15
A new substance able to allow airplane wings to self-heal could help prevent small scratches from developing into dangerous cracks.

Created by a team from the U.K., the substance was inspired by the way the human body’s blood will dry to form a scab over a wound. The “healing agent,” a carbon-based liquid, is held within microspheres that are scattered throughout the airplane wing, along with a catalyst. When the wing surface is scratched, the spheres will break open and release the liquid, which then hardens when it contacts the catalyst.
