Self-Healing Membrane Improves Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Self-Healing Membrane Improves Hydrogen Fuel Cells
Mar-29-17
A self-healing membrane could help extend the life of hydrogen fuel cells.

In hydrogen fuel cells, the anode and cathode are separated by a thin polymer membrane, usually made from Nafion. However, the membrane will wear down over time, forming small holes and cracks that degrade the battery.

The self-healing membrane, from a team at the University of Delaware, is made up of a polymer embedded with capsules of liquid Nafion. When the capsules detect ruptures in the membrane, they will break open to fill the defect, extending the life of the fuel cell.
