Smart Membrane Improves Battery Performance

Smart Membrane Improves Battery Performance
Aug-29-16
A new plastic membrane inspired by living cells will adjust to improve battery performance by preventing power leakage.

Developed by a team from Ohio State University, the smart membrane was designed to help keep the battery’s charge from leaking between the anode and cathode, which can damage the battery as well as drain the charge. The membrane, inspired by the body’s own cells, is made up of a carefully designed, conductive polymer with pores that will open or close in response to the battery’s charging or discharging.

The team hopes that, among other applications, the smart membrane will lead to EV batteries that can be recharged more quickly and hold a charge longer.
