Sonar System Gives Phones All-Over Touch Sensitivity

Sonar System Gives Phones All-Over Touch Sensitivity
May-29-16
Taking inspiration from Batman’s technology, a team of engineers have created software that could give all phones touch sensitivity.

Developed by a team from the University of Michigan, the system makes use of the phone’s existing microphone and speakers, and enables the device to have touch sensitivity all over the body—not just on the screen. The software triggers the phone’s speakers to emit a constant tone higher than 18 kHz (outside human hearing range), which can be detected by the phone’s mic. Applying force to the phone’s body will interfere with the sound vibrations and change the tone, which can be detected by the software and translated into a command.
