Sorting Cancer Cells by Squishiness

Sorting Cancer Cells by Squishiness
Dec-04-15
By taking advantage of the extra-squishness of cancer cells, researchers have created a filter able to screen large number of cells based on their mechanotype.

The device, created by a team from UCLA, uses a technique parallel microfiltration (PMF) to push the cell and liquid solution through narrow channels. Because the softer, squishier cancer cells are able to move more easily through the device, allowing them to so be sorted quickly for identification.
