Translating Thought to Text

Translating Thought to Text
Jun-22-15
Researchers have created the first “brain-to-text interface” able to read the user’s mind and transform the thoughts to written words.

Created by a team from Albany, New York, the technology is still in the development stages—and requires a bit of open-skull surgery. Volunteers who agreed to have electrodes placed in their brains read aloud from books while a computer monitored their brain activity to develop a baseline. Using a speech recognition program, phonetic labels were then created based on each person’s speech.

Although the computer was programmed with a limited selection of words, the research results are promising. The computers were able to decipher the thoughts of seven patients and translate those thoughts into text.
