Using Magnets to Target Deep Tissues

Using Magnets to Target Deep Tissues
Dec-19-14
By using magnets to repel nanoparticles, researchers have found a way to deliver treatments to previously unreachable areas deep within the body.

Magnetic nanoparticles hold promise as a way to deliver medicines to targeted locations, but until now their use has been limited to areas near the surface. This is because the ferromagnetic particles tend to flip to align their magnetic field and then attract each other, away from the deep tissue and toward the external ferromagnet.

The new method, developed by teams from the University of Maryland and Weinberg Medical Physics, uses magnetic pulses to create a momentary magnetic field that rotates the nanorods without tugging them forward, then quickly pulses again to push the particles away before they can rotate again. Repeating the process in different locations allowed the team to guide the nanorods deeper into the body.
