Xerox’s Automated Vehicle Passenger Detection could help encourage carpooling by accurately identifying how many people are riding in a particular vehicle.
The VPDS consists of a pair of cameras that capture the image from both the front and the side of the car. Using specialized algorithms and computer vision technology, the system is able to differentiate between empty and occupied seats, returning an accurate passenger count while still complying with data protection laws.
In tests, the VPDS showed an accuracy of between 95 and 97 percent.
